Creating a safe opportunity for youth with special needs and youth-at-risk to thrive.
H.H.C – H.E.A.L removes barriers by partnering youth with horses in rural settings so that they can work through issues resulting from low self-esteem and lack of self-confidence, as well as feelings of anxiety and fear.
This helps them to become vital, self aware, active community members, capable of building healthy relationships, understanding their own boundaries and developing communication skills.
This program was designed to help youth develop at a pace that is right for them. When they come out to a HEAL Program it will include a variety of interactions and learning, about horses and about ourselves. Safety is always a high priority and paired with our gentle and loving horses are our highly trained facilitators.
Youth will be given an introduction to self awareness as well as be encouraged to participate in on the ground equine activities. These activities include grooming, leading and tacking. Not only will they learn about how to care for their horse they will also learn horse psychology, communication through body language as well as how to get through challenging obstacles as a team.
At Horses Help Canada, we are changing lives for the better. Not just for at-risk-youth, but indirectly for the people whose lives they touch, like parents, peers and teachers.
We simply couldn’t do it without the generosity of sponsorship funds to keep us afloat and thriving. Our commitment is to cover expenses in the most effective way so that we can achieve our goal of getting as many kids as possible into our programs.
I was a HEAL participant 3 years ago, I am now a volunteer. My story about how I was scared and I wasn’t confident – scared to do anything. How I didn’t believe in my self until I came to Horses Help Canada and now I am confident, and now I believe in myself, and now I think I can do “stuff”.
There definitely was an art in how they blended creating a safe well thought out frame, while allowing this magical experience to happen, and promoting it ever so subtly. As I finished my day I was left wondering if I was not the one who had learned the most from my day at the Ranch.
I can see how beneficial and valuable this work is for youth, and especially for building self-esteem and overcoming fears. It was wonderful to see the benefit for the youth who were initially afraid and then confident. I would be interested in continuing to participate and promote this program.
